Thanks to the US training and thought out construction, the disaster was quickly contained and she was able to keep her formation speed at 26kts.Īfter this event, she was stationed at Pearl Harbor for a month for hull repairs and to receive additional anti-air armaments. The hole was 32 feet by 18 feet and killed five seamen, which came from the I-19 submarine. On their second known attempt, they did manage a successful torpedo hit on her port side just forward of her first turret. Their first attempt at hitting the North Carolina ended with a miss as she managed to maneuver successfully. During her assignment of protecting the Saratoga, she was attacked by Japanese submarines. After this campaign, she was given the duty of escorting aircraft carriers with her heavy anti-air compliment. She contributed on the long island hopping and assisted the US Marines in taking the islands of Guadalcanal. She was the first brand new battleship to enter the pacific theatre. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she joined the Pacific theatre of war. Her primary role during her early life was to act as a potential counter to the Tirpitz which was terrorizing the Atlantic Ocean and sank supply convoys. She was nicknamed “The Showboat” due to the amount of attention she received near the end of her construction. She had to have a beam of less than 34m so she could fight within the Panama Canal and a draft of 12m so she could be used in as many shipyards as possible. She was launched on June 1940 and was built to be within the Washington Naval Treaty and London Naval Treaty which made her a challenge to design.
